So, I stumbled upon this program after crossing paths with the creator’s CV online. I felt like supporting a minority developer and seeing what kind of benefit I could get from the program.

Just to be clear, I am not bashing this software, nor am I supporting the software without ample consideration of it’s shortcomings. This is an honest review, as well as my findings after encountering some problems with it’s use.

Overview

This is the description found on the apps Steam Store page:

CompressorX is a game-changing compression layer for the Windows File System that harnesses the power of a specially trained AI model to deliver lossless, transparent data compression for your files.

This is followed by a list of features, some of which are directly tested later on this page.

The following I can say is working out of the above list. You do save space, the compression is quick, the compression is one click, and it is transparent compression.

Why The Tests?

When I originally got the software and tested it, it appeared to be working, however when comparing the free space on my drive, there were two things I was noticing.

  1. The Free Space was not changing.
  2. The compression speed, no matter which method I chose, seemed to be suspiciously quick.
  3. When Closing the app and re-opening, the “compressed” files seemed to uncompress themselves, which was later confirmed in discord that it should not be doing that.

I had reached out on Discord for support, and while I did not directly receive help with figuring things out, it does appear that others had similar questions. Hence this writeup.

The Test Scope

TLDR;

This program does not play well with windows file and folder compression, if it is enabled, it will throw an error, but will not offer any visual cue to the issue (see point #2 above) It will log an error, but there is no indication on the UI that it is unable to compress, the software will carry on like compression occurred normally. This I believe is the biggest shortfall of the software, the verbosity is lacking and documentation on proper working environment is either not clear or non-existent.
